Su Karagöz is a community professional with a philosophy and business background. Su entered the world of community building through working in the communications industry for 4+ years, with a focus on social media. Currently, she works as a Community Lead at TurkishWIN.

Following her love for reading books and discussions, Su went to St. John's College, Annapolis to study philosophy. During her college years, she worked part-time at her college's Communications & Social Media Office as an assistant where she fell in love with the job.  After graduating from St. John's College in Annapolis, Su had to move back to Turkey because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Looking for ways to connect her formal education with meaningful work, she joined TurkishWIN.

Believing in the power of connecting people through conversation, Su is now working to grow as a community professional!

What do you do for a living? Tell us more about you.

I build and manage online communities for a living! After I graduated from St. John's College in Annapolis, where I studied philosophy, I kept looking for a meaningful way to apply what I've learned to what I love doing: connecting people who share similar values.

Through my profession, I get to meet and learn with many amazing women, whom I also get to work with towards achieving gender equality.

I'm an animal lover - I have 2 cats: Olips and a little one without a name yet :) and 3 dogs: Bambam, Artur, and Gita - and I love traveling, especially around Turkey!

What's the best piece of advice you've received?

Open your mind to the unknown, and let go of your fears. The world will open up in ways you didn't even know it could bend! - I don't remember where I heard this advice from, but it has stuck with me ever since. Letting go of our fears is perhaps the hardest thing we can do, but it's so rewarding when you let go of your preconceptions, and let your own magic work!

One thing you wish you had known earlier in your career.

That I didn't have to make a decision about 'what' I wanted to be so early on. Our careers are as fluid as life itself. Interests, passions, and expertise change. Life might pull you in a different direction, and there's no rule that says you have to know what you love doing at the beginning of your career!

What is the most courageous thing you have ever done?

Moving to the US for college when I was 18! Hardest change I've ever experienced, but extremely rewarding in the long run.

If you could have any three people (dead or alive) over for dinner – who would they be?

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk - I know this might be an obvious choice for a lot of people, but I can't think of anyone else that I feel so connected to, even though I've never met them in person. Even today, 84 years after his death, there are so many things we still need to learn from his vision and it would be an honor to have a conversation with him.

Who is your role model?

My biggest role model is my mom. Her courage, ambition, persistence, and hunger for knowledge inspire me every day.

Name a book you read that positively shaped you.

The Essential Plotinus, Plotinus - Specifically the section on beauty.

You believe in sisterhood at work because…

the future of humanity lies in the hands of women, and there is nothing stronger than a sisterhood of women who are working towards a common goal. I also believe that everyone's own sisterhood is their chosen family, and that is a stronger bond than anyone can think!

If you had one superpower, what would it be?

I would love to be able to fly and breathe underwater. I know that's two, but it's hard to pick!
