Tara Chantal Hopkins has been working in Turkey since 1989. Initially, she came as a language teacher.
After that, she moved on to establish the Ashoka Turkey program and set up the Civic Involvement Projects program at Sabanci University, the first required program at the university level in Turkey of its kind. She now runs cop(m)adam, the Garbage Ladies, an endeavor for women who have not previously earned a salary, making useful pieces out of waste materials. Tara has been active politically and in civil society since she was 14. She has worked in the U.S., Mexico and Japan; she has conducted seminars and trainings on civic participation, peace education and women's empowerment from Australia to Afghanistan.
